MCO Newsletter November 2009 Issue #5Farm NewsG'day and welcome to our latest newsletter. Since our last newsletter where I talked about how dry it had been we've finally had some rain. All in all we had about 60mm over a week, which was enough to green things up and kick start our summer crops. It's amazing how quickly things surge on after some proper rain, a lot of this is to do with the natural Nitrogen that comes down with the rainwater, which is like free fertiliser for our crops. Our sweetcorn has got tall enough to sway in the wind now and the rain seemed to make it grow about 6 inches overnight. I think we'll be picking it at the end of November. Lebanese cucumbers are looking great too and I noticed the first flower on one of the plants this morning. Great news for basil lovers as this also is only just around the corner! Willing Workers on Organic FarmsWe been blessed at the farm with having some great wwoofer's recently. Woofer's are volunteers that work on organic farms, usually in exchange for food and accommodation and are great for getting jobs done on the farm. We all got stuck into a project a couple of weeks ago when we decided to grow some of our leafy green veges under a shade house. This involved laying out straw bales and putting compost on top and then planting into the compost. It was a lot of hard work moving the bales around and shovelling the compost on top of them but we managed to get the job done in just a few hours. The photos show how we did it.
Community SupportWe are committed to supporting our local community and one such way that we want to do this is to help raise awareness about the benefits of organic food to school-children. We are currently looking at launching a school fundraising programme, whereby a percentage of our food box sales will get donated back to schools. We are also keen to have school open days at the farm. If you are a teacher or parent who would like to receive more information please email: info@munchcrunchorganics.com.au EggsWe now have locally grown certified organic eggs available to include in your organic food boxes. The eggs are supplied by organigrow.com.au which is set on 70 acres of prime agricultural land at Gundurimba, located about 7kms from the Lismore CBD. The farm is owned by two generations of the Cripps Clark family. Simon Cripps Clark set the certified organic egg business up in 2008 and has a strong passion for the land and environment. You'll find Simons delicious eggs available for sale in the shop section of our website. SMS & Email RemindersA number of you have been forgetting to order your boxes before the midnight cut-off time on Tuesday. Just to clarify you need to order before midnight Tuesday and we'll deliver your box on the Friday of the same week. We recommend using our email and SMS reminder service, which if you don't already use can do so by signing in on our website and changing the settings in your account. Introduce a FriendWe have a great new scheme going at the moment for our existing customers. If you introduce a friend, neighbour or colleague to our home delivery service and they make an order you'll receive $10 off your next order. They will also receive $15 off their first order. There is no limit to the amount of friends you can introduce, so spread the word and you could get lots of free organic food on us! |
